CHARACTERISTICS

The Red Squirrel, a member of the Sciuridae, is an arboreal, omnivorous rodent often referred to as a Forest Seeder and folklore as the Devil King Squirrel.

RANGE AND HABITAT

The Red Squirrel has a typical head-and-body length of 7.5 to 9 inches, a tail length of 6 to 8 inches, and a mass of 0.55 to 0.75 pounds. Generally, a Red Squirrel has a life expectancy of 3 years. Some individuals can reach more than 7 years, but not more than 10 years at most. The coat of the Red Squirrel varies in color with time and locations. There are several coat color morphs of Red Squirrels ranging from black to brown or even red, except for their consistent cream ventral body hair. For example, it is common for red-coat squirrels in the United Kingdom, while in other parts of Europe and Asia, different coat colors coexist within populations. The fur also changes seasonally each year, with the fur being thinner in summer and thicker in winter. From August to November, the Red Squirrel will show noticeably large ear-tufts. Like other squirrels, the Red Squirrel has a long and fluffy tail to help itself maintain balance when jumping from tree to tree. And it will wrap its body to keep warm when sleeping. Its sharp curved claws help climb up or descend from high trees easily. The Red Squirrel is shy, mostly solitary when foraging for food, and will even refuse to share food.

DIET

Red Squirrels spend 60% to 80% of their lives foraging and feeding, mainly on seeds, especially seeds inside cones which they can take out cleanly. Fungi, birds’ eggs, berries, young twigs and more can also be their food, and sometimes the sap from the bark is also a delicacy to them. Feeding Red Squirrels is relatively simple with some nuts, vegetables and fruits only, but attention should be paid to feed unprocessed nuts and raw non-toxic vegetables and fruits, such as melon seeds, carrots, cabbage and so on. If you are too lazy to prepare food, you can also feed ready-made parrot food, which contains the same nutrients as what squirrels need.

BEHAVIOR

Red Squirrels usually mate during the late winter months of February to March and the summer months of June to July. A Red Squirrel can give birth to up to 2 litters per year, and each litter is about 3-4 babies and even reaches up to 6 babies. After 40 days of life, Red Squirrels begin to leave their nests to forage on their own. They usually leave their nests during the day, most actively in the morning. And at noon, they will stay in the nests to avoid the hot weather, or to avoid natural predators such as wild cats, owls, goshawks, red foxes, wild dogs and so on. In winter, their activities are flexible. Sometimes they stay outside for a long time in search of scarce food, and sometimes they stay in their nests all day due to the bad weather. Red Squirrels themselves have poor heat tolerance, so the suitable temperature for them is below 20°C-30°C (68°F-86°F). They are not in the habit of hibernation, but still prefer to store their leftovers in the soil or hidden corners of trees, in case of food shortage. Although they usually come alone when foraging, they sometimes meet in nests to keep each other warm and live in groups. A hierarchy is formed when living in groups, with the larger or older Red Squirrels generally occupying the leadership position.

Red squirrels have a good sleep

Red squirrels are hopping in the forest. He heard a bear howling nearby. However, there are no bears in the birch forest. It was published in the forest daily, and so did the woodpecker. The red squirrel stopped to listen carefully and then realized that it was his belly that had not eaten breakfast!

Fortunately, the red squirrel hid two nuts. The question is, where are they hiding? His squirrel red turned into vermilion. This happens whenever he forgets something and is in a hurry. Because he was a little angry and a little embarrassed.

All this is of no avail. I can only find the fruit again. Red squirrels jump and jump, left, right, forward. Jump and jump – wait, wait, stop!

There were two nuts lying on the ground. I found two at once! There’s another one in front, right there! Red squirrels jumped faster and faster excitedly, jumping and jumping – eh, what is that?
